It’s what you’ve worked for your entire life. You’ve put in the long hours, you’ve diligently built up your nest egg, and now the time has finally come—retirement. Time to see the world!
If you’re like most people, one of the biggest retirement perks you look forward to is the freedom to travel the world. But the world is a big place. With so many destinations to choose from, picking the right one might feel overwhelming.
That’s why I’ve put together this list. The definition of a “dream vacation” is different for everyone, but these five amazing destinations are certainly good places to start.
Route 66, USA
Before you go off jet-setting around the world, why not take some time to get to know the wonders of your own country? I’m not talking about quick weeklong trips here. I’m talking about an extended cross-country road trip on the legendary Route 66. Take your time with this one—there’s no rush! Consider buying or renting a comfortable motorhome and meandering leisurely from destination to destination. And if you’re worried about budgeting for such a long trip, why not rent out your house while you’re gone? If you’re lucky, you may even end up earning more than you spend, prolonging your retirement fund.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and for good reason. It’s incredible. Each year, it draws in more and more tourists. The neat thing about Machu Picchu is it offers varying levels of convenience and adventure. If you’re active and love hiking, there are several different treks you can take leading to Machu Picchu. But if you prefer comfort or suffer from any health ailments, there are comfortable trains and buses that bring you right to the entrance.
Northern Lights
This isn’t a destination per se, but an experience—a wondrous spectacle. The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a breathtaking phenomenon that cannot be missed. It can be seen from several different countries, so you can take your pick. Some of the more popular viewing points are in Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavian countries like Iceland, Finland, and Sweden.
Great Wall Of China
You’ve heard about it countless times throughout your life. Wouldn’t it be awesome to actually see it in person? It’s one of the biggest man-made construction projects on earth. Started way back in the 7th century B.C., it measures an impressive 21,196 miles in length. It’s hard to imagine the manpower required to accomplish such a feat. It would be a shame to not get to experience it for yourself.
Australia
Perhaps you’d like to see the other side of the world but are worried your Chinese language skills are a bit rusty. If that’s the case, Australia is the perfect solution. Not only is English spoken (with a charming accent), but there is also plenty to do and see. For example, the incredible wildlife and the Great Barrier Reef—the world’s largest coral reef system.
